With the July 2025 National Constitution Summit fast approaching, eminent leaders and stakeholders from Nigeria’s North Central zone converged in Abuja on Tuesday for a critical town hall meeting aimed at forging a united front for constitutional reforms.

Organised under the banner of the Patriots Zonal Advocacy and Mobilisation Committee, the high-level engagement served as a pre-summit deliberation to harmonise the region’s position ahead of the main event convened by the Patriots, led by former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku.

Chaired by Dr. Mike Omeri and coordinated by Hajia Amina Saleh Jambo, the Abuja meeting drew representatives from across the six North Central states, including political leaders, civil society actors, and community influencers. National chairman of the Patriots Advocacy and Mobilisation Committee, Prof. Anthony Kila, delivered the keynote address.

The gathering had previously been postponed in respect for victims of recent violence in Benue State. In light of that tragedy, participants unanimously stressed the need for Nigeria’s future constitution to prioritise security of lives and property while embracing the nation’s rich diversity.

“The North Central is a microcosm of Nigeria,” Dr. Omeri declared. “Our zone must take the lead in shaping a constitution that works for all.”

In his address, Prof. Kila urged the region’s delegates to look beyond party lines. “This constitution project is not partisan. It belongs to all Nigerians,” he said. “In making demands, we must be willing to offer others what we ask for ourselves.”

Prominent voices at the meeting included Hon. Mark Gbillah, Hon. Aminu Zang, Dr. Helen Taiwo Adebakin, Engr. Morgan, Barr. Abubakar Ibrahim Azara, and Hon. Musa Oseni, among others. They presented field reports from ongoing consultation efforts and shared key insights from their constituencies.

Also in attendance were Dr. Richard Obande, Hon. Shehu Baruwa Beji, Mr. Emmanuel Alamu, Mrs. Amina Zango, Dr. Olu Usim-Wilson, and Mrs. Rose Obi. All reaffirmed their commitment to intensify public engagement and ensure North Central’s voice is clear and united at the national summit.

The July National Constitution Summit, which will be jointly chaired by Senator Gbenga Daniel and Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, is expected to gather diverse voices from across the country to push for a people-driven constitutional order.

As momentum builds, North Central stakeholders say they are prepared to lead with clarity, unity, and purpose.
