A viral video has sparked reactions online after billionaire businessman and UBA Chairman, Tony Elumelu, appeared to reprimand a young woman for addressing him simply as “Tony” at a public event.
In the video circulating on social media, the lady is heard greeting Elumelu as “Good morning, Tony,” prompting an immediate reaction from the business mogul.
Elumelu appeared displeased with the manner in which she addressed him and questioned her choice of words, creating an awkward but seemingly light-hearted moment that has since attracted widespread attention online.
NewsmakersNG learnt that the lady was identified as a UBA graduate/executive trainee attending the bank’s Graduate Management Accelerated Programme (GMAP) graduation ceremony.
While some social media users described Elumelu’s response as unnecessarily harsh, others argued that the young woman should have shown greater respect when addressing a prominent businessman and elder in a formal setting.
The incident has triggered a fresh social media debate over familiarity, respect and the boundaries of informal greetings when interacting with Nigeria’s high-profile personalities.
Elumelu, 63, is the chairman of UBA and Heirs Holdings and founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation.
