NNPC, SPDC Joint Venture Donates US$1 Million to Support Borno Flood Victims

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC JV)—operator of the NNPC Limited, SPDC, TotalEnergies, and Nigerian Agip Oil Company joint venture—has announced a US$1 million (N1.7billion) donation to aid over half a million people displaced by severe flooding in Borno State.

“This donation will fund the procurement and distribution of essential relief materials and medical supplies for displaced residents in urgent need of support,” said Osagie Okunbor, Managing Director of SPDC and Country Chair of Shell Companies in Nigeria. He added that a local NGO with experience in assisting displaced populations will oversee the distribution in collaboration with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency.

The SPDC JV’s intervention follows an alert from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in September, triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam. The JV also responded to calls for support from Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, who highlighted the critical needs of flood-affected communities.

“We view this support as a necessity that reflects our commitment to society and our duty of care to those in need. It underscores our deep concern for the victims of this devastating flooding,” Okunbor stated. He noted that this contribution is part of an ongoing commitment by the SPDC Joint Venture to assist communities in the region as they recover from recent conflicts.

Bala Wunti, Chief Upstream Operating Officer of NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), emphasized the urgency of the relief effort, particularly given the region’s pre-existing vulnerabilities. “This flooding has disrupted lives and socio-economic activities, with women and children disproportionately affected. We are pleased the joint venture can provide support during this challenging time,” Wunti said.

“As a responsible corporate entity, NNPC is committed to supporting SPDC JV’s efforts in delivering vital aid. Our thoughts are with those affected and with the agencies working tirelessly to provide relief. We pledge ongoing support, both through immediate aid and through partnerships for sustainable recovery,” he added.
