In a display of corporate social responsibility, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo) have flagged off the fourth edition of their flagship health initiative — Vision First — in Mushin, Lagos, with over 700 residents already benefiting from free medical care, including 40 successful eye surgeries conducted on the first day alone.
The five-day outreach, which began on July 7, is being implemented in collaboration with Kolmarg Eyesight Foundation and co-venture partners — Nigerian Agip Exploration Limited, TotalEnergies Nigeria, and Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria (Deepwater) Ltd. It offers eye and cardiovascular screenings, surgeries, and health education services to underserved communities.
Speaking at the formal opening on July 8, SNEPCo Managing Director Ronald Adams, represented by Head of Corporate Relations Abubakar Ahmed, highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative, particularly as it is the first major social investment linked to the Final Investment Decision on the Bonga North Project.
“We are beginning to see the benefits materialize — starting with initiatives like this that deliver direct and lasting value to communities,” Adams said.
Also speaking at the event, the Chief Upstream Investment Officer of National Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), Oluwaseyi Omotowa, represented by Nkechi Anaedobe, emphasized the programme’s impact: “This initiative embodies our commitment to improving the health and well-being of communities where we operate.”
Chairman of Mushin Local Council Development Area, Emmanuel Bamigboye, and Director of Kolmarg Eyesight Foundation, Dr. Olukorede Adenuga, praised the effort and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare at the grassroots.
Since its inception in 2022, the Vision First programme has reached more than 4,000 people across Nigeria, distributed nearly 2,000 prescription glasses, and restored vision through nearly 200 surgeries, including cataract removals and other corrective procedures.
NNPC, SNEPCo, and their partners continue to deepen their social investments beyond healthcare, with ongoing interventions in education, infrastructure, cancer treatment, and support for displaced communities across the country.
