Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has filed a formal appeal at the Court of Appeal in Abuja seeking to quash his life imprisonment sentence and terrorism conviction, documents sighted by Newsmakerslive.org reveal.

The notice of appeal, dated February 4, 2026, lists the Federal Republic of Nigeria as respondent and challenges the 2025 ruling of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which convicted Kanu under the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act 2013.

Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment for allegedly committing acts preparatory to terrorism and for a broadcast made on May 30, 2021, which authorities say was intended to intimidate the population in connection with a sit-at-home order.

The appeal raises procedural concerns, including that the sentence was imposed without allocutus — the opportunity for the convicted to make a final statement — and that the court did not take into account relevant mitigation or sentencing factors.

In his appeal, Kanu is seeking an order allowing the appeal, quashing his conviction in all counts, reversing and setting aside the life imprisonment sentence, and discharging and acquitting him of all charges.

He has also requested any further orders the court may deem appropriate.

The appeal has significant implications for the southeast region, where IPOB has been at the centre of separatist agitation.

Analysts say the case could influence the federal government’s approach to civil unrest and separatist movements in the region.

Observers note that Kanu’s case has drawn international attention, with human rights organisations monitoring the proceedings for adherence to due process and fair trial standards.

The appeal is now pending before the Court of Appeal in Abuja, where it will undergo written submissions and oral arguments before a ruling is delivered.
