Following the announcement by the Nigerian government that mobile sim cards must be linked to the National Identity Number (NIN), mobile telecommunication service providers have announced simple steps that subscribers can take to update their phone numbers with the NIN.
MTN users
Dial *785# using the phone number you wish to link; enter your NIN and submit. Alternatively, dial *785#Your NIN# from the phone number you wish to link. The number will be linked to your NIN automatically.
Subscribers can also visit https://mtnonline.com/nim/ using their phone or computer. They can then complete the NIN linking form by entering their name, phone number, NIN, and email address.
Airtel Users
Dial *121*1# on the Airtel line you wish to link and send. Enter your 11-digit NIN and send. Then wait for the message confirming your submission.
Globacom Users
Subscribers are to text “UPDATENIN”, followed by the NIN, First Name and Last Name to 109 or visit the nearest Globacom office to register/link their NIN.
9Mobile Users
For now, subscribers can check their NIN status by dialling *346# from their 9mobile line.
Also, those already enrolled but have lost their NIN are advised to dial *346# to retrieve the NIN. The USSD code is available on MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has warned that all mobile sim cards registration not updated with NIN by December 31, 2020 will be disconnected from the network.
The Nigerian Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has also said that subscribers can link their NIN to more than one sim card.
For those who are yet register, the federal government has approved 173 centres and 30 state government institutions to conduct NIN enrolment across the country.
