The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has sounded a fresh warning to Nigerians, particularly residents of Anambra State, over the illegal collection of National Identification Numbers (NIN) by unauthorized individuals posing as government agents.
In a press statement issued today, NIMC revealed it had received reports of unscrupulous persons soliciting NINs from unsuspecting residents in exchange for money—a practice that violates the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, the Data Protection Act, and the Cyber Crime Act.
Working swiftly with the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Commission confirmed that the culprits behind the scheme have been apprehended and are undergoing interrogation.
NIMC emphasized that they will face the full wrath of the law.
“The public is strongly advised not to submit their NIN to any unauthorized individual, group, or platform, especially not for monetary rewards,” said Dr. Kayode Adegoke, Head of the Commission’s Corporate Communications Unit. “Such actions are illegal, and offenders will be sanctioned.”
NIMC reiterated that the NIN is strictly for accessing verified government or private sector services and should only be shared when absolutely necessary and with authorized entities.
The Commission urges anyone who notices suspicious NIN collection activities to report them via email at nimccustomercare@nimc.gov.ng or call 07002255646 / 01923000010.
NIMC thanked the country’s security agencies for their continued support in safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s national identity system.
