The Nigerian Institute of Journalism Alumni Association (NIJAA) has elected a new national executive council, with Olumuyiwa Akintunde emerging President and Oluwayomi Oluwapelumi winning a keenly contested race for Organising Secretary.
The election, which recorded 197 votes, produced seven national officers expected to steer the affairs of the association and strengthen collaboration and professional engagement among graduates of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism.
Akintunde secured 189 YES votes against eight NO votes to emerge President, while Adedola Isabella Omwen was elected Vice President with 188 YES votes and nine NO votes.
In the contest for Organising Secretary, Oluwapelumi polled 127 votes to defeat Ake Ayodeji, who received 70 votes.
Mark Akhuetie also emerged National Publicity Secretary after defeating Benjamin Sanni by 137 votes to 60.
Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji was elected General Secretary with 191 YES votes against six NO votes, while Chika Nnamani emerged Assistant Secretary with 190 YES votes and seven NO votes.
Adegbemi Adewale was elected Legal Adviser after securing 191 YES votes against six NO votes.
The newly elected executive council comprises Akintunde as President; Omwen, Vice President; Kayode-Adedeji, General Secretary; Nnamani, Assistant Secretary; Akhuetie, National Publicity Secretary; Oluwapelumi, Organising Secretary; and Adewale, Legal Adviser.
Reacting to the outcome, Oluwapelumi thanked members of the association for their confidence and support, describing the victory as a call to service rather than merely an electoral triumph.
She also extended an olive branch to her opponent, pledging to work with him and other members of the association irrespective of their positions during the election.
According to Oluwapelumi, the incoming administration would require inclusion, teamwork and shared responsibility to advance the interests of NIJ alumni and strengthen ties among graduates of the institution.
She is expected to work with Akintunde and other members of the new executive council to develop programmes aimed at increasing members’ participation and advancing the objectives of the association.
With the elections concluded, the new leadership is expected to focus on consolidating unity within NIJAA and translating the aspirations of members into programmes that strengthen the association and its professional network.
