Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, has died at the age of 50 in Türkiye after a prolonged illness, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed.

Lele reportedly passed away in Ankara on April 19, bringing to an end a distinguished diplomatic career that spanned several decades within Nigeria’s foreign service.

In a statement, the ministry described him as a committed and accomplished diplomat who contributed significantly to Nigeria’s foreign policy engagements across multiple regions.

Before his recent appointment, Lele served as Director overseeing the Middle East and Gulf Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he played a key role in managing Nigeria’s diplomatic relations in the region.

He was among the career diplomats nominated earlier in 2026 as part of efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic representation globally.

Lele, who hailed from Bauchi State, studied Economics at Bayero University, Kano, and held several foreign postings during his career, including assignments in Germany, Togo and Saudi Arabia.

Colleagues and officials described his death as a major loss to Nigeria’s diplomatic corps, noting his professionalism, experience and dedication to public service.

His remains have been returned to Nigeria for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
