A recent post by the Defence Headquarters on X has stirred a wave of reactions across the country, as Nigerians interpret the message against the backdrop of a widely-reported confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer, Lt A.M. Yerima.
In the post, the Defence Headquarters declared, “It is an honour to serve in the Nigerian Military — Unshaken. Unbent. Unbroken.”
The statement, delivered with a strong tone of institutional resolve and authority, came after a video circulated showing a clash over a disputed plot of land in the Gaduwa District of Abuja. The incident led to a standoff between Wike’s team and military personnel guarding the site.
Social media users responded swiftly. One user, @iOccupyNigeria, wrote, “@OlayinkaLere kindly copy your boss @GovWike — the Nigerian Armed Forces don send message loud and clear: ‘Unshaken. Unbent. Unbroken.’ Make am understand say this one no be political back-and-forth — na institutional authority. The uniform no dey reply noise. If him fit, make him go ahead — start making noise about this one. Let’s see how far mouth fit carry am when institutional discipline don enter the chat. God bless the Nigerian Armed Forces. God bless Nigeria.”
Another observer, @FemiBadekale, commended Lt Yerima, “LT A.M. Yerima professionally represents Nigeria military well, he should be promoted. Educating the everyone that there’s no retired general, his actions will restore the lost honor back to the military He was cool, courteous & brave, indeed he was an officer with integrity.”
@MEbuzome5996 remarked, “He made every patriotic Nigerians proud by standing tall in the face of verbal insults, bully and intimidation. He showed tolerance, professionalism and gallantry.”
On the other hand, @Kwara_Yakoyo questioned the tone of institutional backing, “This sounds like endorsement of illegal activity of the naval officer who obstructed civilian from carrying out their lawful duty. We have serious problem in this country.”
Meanwhile, @Anyi_one11 encouraged the army to learn from the incident, “Leave promotion matter, Nigerian army should emulate this from him and not bow to anything that present itself as power figure b4 it drags the country to ruin.”
@Samaila_Dra wrote, “This is what we refer to as a soldier’s principle: refrain from being controlled by any politician and fulfil your duty! For that, we will support you. God bless the Nigerian armed forces.”
@Mubii100 stated, “I am proud of Lt A M Yerima. This is what a Nigerian soldier should be. Unfazed by any intimidation and proud to follow the chain of command without succumbing to external pressure. Please reward, protect and promote him. He will make Nigeria great.”
@Onyebuchi111700 offered a more critical take, “Humbly and respectfully your duties aren’t land issues that’s civil matter. That theatrics today is almost as synonymous as how police men are being used by private citizens to achieve their aim Protect our borders and ensure that lives and properties aren’t destroyed Namaste 🙏”
And @AkandeGbenga14 questioned the relevance of the officer’s role in the land dispute, “So part of a Navy officer job is to be guiding a plot of empty land?”
This range of reactions underscores a broader discussion in Nigeria about the proper role of the armed forces, civil-military boundaries, respect for the chain of command and civilian oversight.
The social-media post by the Defence Headquarters appears to be seen by many as a reaffirmation of the military’s institutional autonomy and professionalism in the light of public pressure and political tension.
