A Nigerian woman was today jailed 21 years in the UK for trying to murder a 90-year-old widow.
Abosede Adeyinka, 52, bludgeoned her victim over the head and stabbed her in the neck in an attempt to rob her on the evening of April 27, 2017, the court heard.
The mother of three, who is a Sunday school teacher, launched the attack hoping to steal £31,000 she knew her victim Pam Batten kept in the house.
Adeyinka had forced her way into Batten’s home, knocking her to the ground before striking her twice with a hammer she had hidden in her handbag.
When the victim pleaded for mercy, Adeyinka grabbed a kitchen knife and threw it at her, leaving it embedded in her neck.
Adeyinka had been the carer for her victim’s late-husband, Ernest, in the last six months of his life and knew there were bags of cash hidden around the house in West Drayton.
.
She covered her face with a red lace scarf during the attack, but the victim recognised her immediately as the professional carer who had taken care of her late husband.
The victim said the attack has shattered her confidence, making her afraid to be home alone at night or speak to strangers and terrified she will be attacked again.
.
Adeyinka, who is also a charity worker, burst into tears and wailed loudly as Judge Peter Clarke QC jailed her for 21 years at Blackfriars crown court.
Adeyinka fled from the house empty handed after her victim said that her son was coming to visit that evening, but her coat and bag were covered in the pensioner’s blood.
The victim was found lying in the hallway by a neighbour and was close to death when she was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.
