The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has announced plans to hold the fourth edition of the Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture, with a focus on the critical role of the media, electoral umpire and citizens in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
The lecture, scheduled for Thursday, July 23, 2026, will take place at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
This year’s lecture is themed “The Media, INEC, Voters and Path to Credible Elections,” reflecting growing national conversations on electoral integrity and the responsibilities of key stakeholders ahead of future elections.
Former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, will chair the event, while Professor Sylvester Odion Akhaine of the Department of Political Science, Lagos State University, will deliver the keynote lecture.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is expected as the Special Guest of Honour, alongside distinguished editors, media executives, public officials, academics, civil society leaders and other stakeholders.
The memorial lecture was instituted by the Nigerian Guild of Editors to celebrate the enduring legacy of Alhaji Lateef Jakande, the Guild’s pioneer president and the first civilian governor of Lagos State between 1979 and 1983.
Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s finest journalists and visionary public administrators, Jakande’s contributions to journalism, democratic governance and public service continue to inspire generations of media professionals.
According to the Guild, the annual lecture series provides a platform for robust intellectual engagement on issues of national importance while preserving the ideals and values championed by the late statesman.
The organisers have invited journalists, policymakers, election managers, political actors, civil society organisations, students and members of the public to participate in what promises to be another insightful edition of the memorial lecture.
