An alleged internet fraudster, Lawrence Olanrewaju Folawunmi, has been arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos in connection with an alleged multi million dollar fraud case in the United States.

Folawunmi is wanted by U.S. authorities over accusations of wire fraud and business email compromise schemes said to have cost a U.S. company about $1.25 million.

According to available information, he allegedly deceived the victim company into rerouting payments on eight different occasions between 2021 and 2024.

The suspect was apprehended by Nigeria’s Interpol unit following an Interpol red notice issued at the request of the United States.

He has since been remanded by a Federal High Court, pending the completion of extradition proceedings to the state of Texas, where he is expected to face charges.

The arrest has attracted widespread attention on social media, with several users reacting to images and posts linked to the case.

Some commentators described the development as evidence of growing cooperation between Nigerian law enforcement agencies and international partners in tackling cybercrime.

Although Nigerian authorities are yet to issue a detailed official statement on the matter, the arrest is being viewed as part of a broader effort to curb transnational cyber fraud and improve the country’s record on financial crime enforcement.
