Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned his appointment with immediate effect, citing health reasons, according to a State House statement.
In a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Badaru said he was stepping down to attend to pressing health concerns.
President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed appreciation for the minister’s service and commitment to national security.
Badaru, 63, a two-term governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023, was appointed Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023. His sudden exit comes at a sensitive moment for the country, days after President Tinubu declared a national security emergency and ordered sweeping reforms, including massive recruitment into the armed forces and security services.
The presidency said the President is expected to transmit the name of Badaru’s successor to the Senate later this week.
The statement announcing his resignation was issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
