The Nigerian Army has been receiving accolades from citizens in the aftermath of its latest encounter with Boko Haram terrorists in the Lake Chad area.
The accolades stemmed from the images of the some of the rescued victims after the terrorists were subdued by troops deployed in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State during an encounter yesterday.
Those rescued included an octogenarian, three women and four children.
The images were shared alongside a statement released by the Nigerian Army Operations Media Coordinator, Col. Aminu Iliyasu, today in Abuja. The Army also shared the images on its social media channels.
Iliyasu said that the rescued victims were evacuated while the children among them were administered with polio vaccination by a Nigerian Army medical team.
He added that no causality was recorded by the army during the operations.
According to him, many of the Boko Haram criminal elements fled in disarray towards the summit of Mandara mountain with gunshot wounds.
Iliyasu said that the army troops had continued “to sustain the tempo of the counter-insurgency operations in the North East with a view to decimating and destroying the remnant of Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa (ISWAP) criminals”.
He added that the troops had also continued to extract credible intelligence report on the presence of some of the criminal insurgents in the areas.
Leading the praise party was exiled Nigerian journalist, Ahmad Salkida, considered as one of the most vocal critics of the tactics of the military in the war against Boko Haram.
Salkida wrote on Twitter: “Most times we underestimate the power of the smallest act of caring, which can not only reverse stereotypes, but can win a war. Indeed, this is a powerful portrayal of the Nigerian Army from the #LakeChad that must be encouraged and sustained.”
