Nigeria Records Highest Daily COVID-19 Infections

Femi Ashekun/

With 796 new cases, Nigeria, yesterday recorded its highest daily COVID-19 infection figure since the beginning of the outbreak in late February.

Before yesterday, the highest daily record of 745 was reported on June 19.

Nigeria’s COVID-19 cases have been on the rise since early December with 675 new infections recorded on Thursday, making it one of the highest daily tally in six months.

In the last two weeks, about 5,000 infections were reported, fanning fears of a resurgence in cases after weeks of low numbers.

The development led the federal government to announcing the reopening of some isolation centres across the country.

Three states with the highest infections figures yesterday are FCT (258), Lagos (248) and Kaduna(117).

It is noteworthy that the governors of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his Kaduna State counterpart, Nasir El-Rufai, have gone into isolation over fears of exposure to the virus.

The total number of COVID-19 infections has now risen to 72,140, while the death toll remained 1,190 after nobody died yesterday.

The number of those that have been discharged from hospitals after treatment stands at 65,712.
