A total of 6, 531 suspected criminals were arrested this year, says the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu, who gave much of the credit to Operation Puff Adder which he launched in April.
Adamu released the figure today during the Monthly IGP conference in Abuja.
He also announced that the multiple police checkpoints in the South Eastern States will be sustained.
He said within the same period, the Force recovered a total of 2,037 firearms of various calibre and descriptions, 21,870 ammunitions, 1,662 recovered vehicles as well as the rescue of 945 kidnapping victims.
Adamu said, “All these achievements would not have been possible without the sacrifice of all of you seated here as well as other officers across all ranks who are out there sacrificing day and night for the safety and security of citizens of our beloved nation.
“I am very proud of you and I use this opportunity to immensely comment and thank you and to assure you all that your efforts are constantly recognized and deeply appreciated.”
Speaking on police preparation for the Yuletide, Adamu said all Commands Commissioners of Police and Assistant Inspectors General of Police must ensure that all their areas are properly policed.
In relation to manpower gaps, the police boss said the recruitment process of the 10,000 Constables approved by the Federal Government under the 2019 batch has been successfully completed and the shortlisted candidates are currently undergoing training at various police training institutions across the country.
He promised to enhance Police welfare and evenly distribute the newly acquired vehicles and other security gadgets to the police.
“The journey to reposition the police may be tortuous but desirous. I can assure the nation that the Force leadership will continue to demonstrate the requisite professional skills needed to bestow to the nation a Police Force of their dreams. In this journey, we are counting on the support and understanding of all Nigerians as we look forward to sustaining our partnership in the upcoming year,” IG said.
