In a landmark move for mental healthcare, Nigeria is opening its first Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Centre in Ikeja, Lagos, offering new hope for patients struggling with depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The Ikeja Specialist Clinic & TMS Centre, developed in partnership with UK-based Transforming Mind Solutions, will be launched on October 10, World Mental Health Day, marking Nigeria’s entry into advanced, evidence-based mental health treatment.

TMS is a non-invasive, drug-free therapy that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain responsible for mood regulation. Globally, it has been proven effective for patients with treatment-resistant depression and other mental health conditions. Unlike traditional medication, TMS avoids chemical side effects, making it a safe and innovative alternative.

“This is a landmark moment for mental health in Nigeria,” said Dr. Olufemi Oluwatayo, Consultant Psychiatrist and CEO of the Ikeja TMS Centre.

“Too many patients suffer in silence because existing options haven’t worked. By introducing TMS here, we are offering hope, recovery, and dignity to those who need it most.”

The Nigerian centre is backed by world-renowned leaders in mental health innovation. Professor Alex O’Neill-Kerr, Medical Director of Transforming Mind Solutions, pioneered TMS introduction into the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) in 2015. He described the Nigerian launch as a life-changing development:

“Mental health conditions don’t recognise borders. TMS offers safe, evidence-based care, and we are proud to bring it to Nigeria.”

Richard Williams, CEO and Founder of Transforming Mind Solutions, added, “Nigeria deserves access to the same level of innovation that has already transformed lives in the UK. Mental health is a global priority, and Nigerians should not be left behind in accessing cutting-edge care.”

Nigeria, with its young and dynamic population, faces a growing demand for mental health services. Rising awareness, combined with limited access to effective treatments, makes the introduction of TMS both timely and essential.

The Lagos launch would mark Transforming Mind Solutions’ first international expansion outside the UK, positioning Nigeria as a pioneer in bringing advanced therapies to Africa.

  1. How can I have access to this treatment option? I’m really interested as I’ve tried many things over the years that has proven futile. I’m desperate and eager for this.
