Less than 24 hours after Australia issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to reconsider travel to Nigeria due to security concerns, the Nigerian government has responded with its own warning for Nigerians travelling to Australia.

In its advisory, Nigeria acknowledged Australia’s reputation for multiculturalism but highlighted persistent issues of intolerance, racial discrimination, and reported cases of violent attacks against African migrants.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs cautioned Nigerian citizens to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions when visiting Australia.

This development follows Australia’s warning about Nigeria, citing risks of kidnapping, armed conflict, and civil unrest, particularly in the northern and southeastern regions.

This exchange of warnings has sparked discussions about mutual perceptions of security and safety.

While Australia’s advisory paints a grim picture of Nigeria’s security landscape, Nigeria’s response underscores concerns about the treatment of its citizens abroad.

Observers view this as a diplomatic tit-for-tat, with both governments prioritising the safety and rights of their citizens amidst growing international scrutiny.
