Niger State is set to witness a major transformation in its road infrastructure as contractors prepare to deliver 556 kilometres of road projects alongside wide-ranging urban renewal initiatives across the state.

The projects, spread across the state’s 25 local government areas, are expected to significantly boost public confidence in government-led infrastructure development and improve mobility for residents.

This was disclosed in a press statement issued by the Information Officer of the Niger State Ministry of Works and Infrastructural Development, Malam Ismaila Saba Favu, and made available to journalists in Minna.

According to the statement, the large-scale construction and rehabilitation programme will cover major urban and inter-city roads in Minna, Kontagora, Suleja, and Bida, and will be executed under a fast-track arrangement to meet the growing transportation needs of the state.

“The projects are designed to improve connectivity, enhance road safety, and reduce travel time for commuters, while also supporting economic and social activities,” Favu stated.

He added that the successful execution of the projects would rest primarily with the Niger State Ministry of Works and Infrastructural Development, which will oversee coordination, supervision, and quality control.

Strategic oversight, he said, would be provided by the Commissioner for Works, Hon. Kabir Abbas, to ensure strict adherence to approved designs and engineering standards.

The statement further explained that under the Commissioner’s leadership, the Ministry will enforce professionalism, discipline, and strict compliance with contractual obligations at all construction sites. It added that the administrative framework of the Ministry, led by the Permanent Secretary, QS Hassan Baba Etsu, would strengthen transparency, accountability, and effective resource management.

According to Favu, the Commissioner and the Permanent Secretary are expected to work closely to ensure that public interest remains paramount throughout project execution. Technical directors, engineers, quantity surveyors, and field officers of the Ministry will also intensify routine monitoring, supervision, and inspection to guarantee quality delivery.

The Information Officer warned that contractors are expected to operate strictly within the terms of their contracts, stressing that any contractor found delaying work without justification, compromising quality, or undermining project guidelines will face appropriate sanctions.

“Such sanctions may include financial penalties, corrective measures, or outright contract termination, in line with established regulations,” he said.
These measures, he explained, are aimed at ensuring value for money and timely delivery of infrastructure projects.

Communities in Minna, Kontagora, Suleja, and Bida are expected to benefit from improved urban mobility, reduced congestion, and better road conditions.
The projects are also projected to boost commerce, agriculture, and industrial activities by improving access and transportation efficiency.

In addition, youth employment and local content participation are expected to increase through the engagement of local labour and suppliers.

Favu further emphasized that stakeholder engagement, including traditional institutions and community leaders, will be encouraged to promote project ownership and sustainability, noting that the fast-track approach reflects the government’s determination to address long-standing road infrastructure challenges within a defined timeframe.

“As implementation progresses, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructural Development will remain firm and proactive in enforcing standards and timelines,” he said.

Upon completion, the 556km road network and accompanying urban renewal projects are expected to contribute significantly to improved infrastructure, service delivery, and overall quality of life across Niger State.

The statement reaffirmed the Niger State Government’s commitment to ensuring that all contractors comply strictly with regulations so that project quality is not compromised, stressing that the ambitious road development programme will strengthen infrastructure delivery and enhance the living environment across the state.
