The Nigeria Forest Security Service (NFSS) has disowned a purported recruitment exercise and any website linked to it, warning Nigerians against falling victim to fraudsters exploiting the name of the Service.
The Commander General of the NFSS, Ambassador Joshua Osatimehin, said although President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of the Service, it is still undergoing a harmonisation process and has not commenced recruitment.
Speaking in Abuja during his Christmas message to Christians, Osatimehin stressed that the NFSS does not currently operate any official recruitment portal and has not authorised the enlistment of 30,000 personnel, as widely circulated online.
He described reports of nationwide recruitment as fake and the handiwork of individuals seeking to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.
According to him, the Service is awaiting formal directives after the conclusion of harmonisation, which will be coordinated through the Office of the National Security Adviser, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment.
“We do not have any official portal yet. While President Bola Tinubu has given approval for the establishment of the NFSS, we are at the verge of harmonisation. It is only after this process that we will receive direction on the next line of action through the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Ministry of Environment. We are not carrying out any recruitment at this time,” Osatimehin said.
He urged the public to disregard all online reports suggesting otherwise.
Osatimehin also said NFSS operatives across the 36 states and the 774 local government areas had been mobilised to support formal security agencies in maintaining law and order and protecting lives and property during and after the Christmas period.
In his message, he called on Christians to use the season to pray for national unity, peace, development and Nigeria’s continued corporate existence, noting that the current challenges facing the country required sober reflection.
The NFSS Commander General expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and security agencies including the Military, DSS, Police, NSCDC, Customs, Immigration and NDLEA for their support to the Service over the years.
He also thanked the Senate and House of Representatives for passing the NFSS Bill, describing it as a demonstration of the National Assembly’s commitment to addressing crimes in forested areas.
Osatimehin appealed to President Tinubu to sign the bill into law, saying it would strengthen national security efforts and align with the administration’s Renewed Hope agenda.
He reaffirmed the NFSS’s commitment to supporting conventional security agencies in tackling banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, Boko Haram activities and other criminal operations, particularly within Nigeria’s forest regions.
