Senator Ned Nwoko has refuted claims by his wife, actress Regina Daniels, that he married her when she was 17 years old.

The Delta North lawmaker described the allegation as “entirely untrue and misleading”, presenting her 2018 Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voter card as proof of her age.

In a statement shared on his official X account, Nwoko explained that during his first meeting with Regina, he asked her age and she told him she was 21.

According to him, she also presented her voter card, which lists her date of birth as October 10, 1998.

“I informed her that I would keep this document in my possession, and I have done so since that day,” Nwoko stated.

He added that records of their marriage, which took place six years ago, confirm that she was 21 at the time.

The senator also referred to an interview Regina’s mother granted the BBC after their marriage, which he said corroborated his claim.

“Any suggestion that I married her at 17 is false and should not be accepted by the public,” he said.

Nwoko further urged the public to treat Regina’s statements with caution, citing what he described as her “current mental condition” and alleged unfinished rehabilitation from drug use, remarks likely to deepen the couple’s ongoing public dispute.

The controversy has reignited discussions about conflicting age records in Nigeria, as supporters of Regina have circulated documents purportedly showing a 2001 birth year, while Nwoko maintains that official records verify the 1998 date.
