The National Democratic Coalition (NDC) has formally adopted Peter Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election and unveiled former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.

The announcement was made on Saturday during the party’s Special National Convention, where delegates unanimously affirmed Obi as the NDC’s presidential flag bearer following the adoption of a motion and resolution by party members.

The development was disclosed by former Bayelsa State governor and senior party leader, Seriake Dickson, who described the convention as a significant moment in the party’s efforts to present what it called a credible alternative to the current administration.

According to Dickson, Obi’s nomination was endorsed by delegates and party stakeholders from across the country, reflecting what he described as the confidence, trust and expectations many Nigerians have placed in the former Anambra State governor.

“It was an honour and privilege, in the company of the National Chairman and other leaders of our party, to affirm His Excellency Peter Obi as the NDC Presidential Flag Bearer of our great party,” Dickson said.

The former governor added that he had the responsibility of presenting the party’s flag to Obi during the convention, assisted by the party’s national chairman.

The most consequential moment of the gathering, however, came when Obi, while accepting the nomination, announced former Kano State governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

The announcement was greeted with loud applause from delegates and party faithful, many of whom viewed the Obi-Kwankwaso alliance as a strategic attempt to unite major opposition constituencies across the South and North.

Party leaders described the ticket as a symbol of national unity, inclusiveness and a shared commitment to political and economic reforms.

Dickson congratulated both men on what he termed a historic milestone and pledged the support of the party’s leadership and membership as preparations begin for the 2027 campaign.

“I congratulate both His Excellency Peter Obi and His Excellency Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso on this historic milestone and assure them of the full support of the leadership, members and stakeholders of our party,” he said.

The emergence of the ticket is expected to reshape political calculations ahead of the next election cycle.

Obi finished third in the 2023 presidential election but secured significant support among young voters, urban professionals and first-time voters, while Kwankwaso built a strong political base across Kano and parts of northern Nigeria through the Kwankwasiyya movement.

Political observers have long speculated about the possibility of an alliance between the two politicians, arguing that a combined ticket could broaden opposition appeal across regional and demographic lines.

The NDC convention also marked the conclusion of the party’s primary election process, with leaders praising delegates and officials for conducting the exercise peacefully.

Dickson urged party members to remain united and focused as the party begins preparations for the next phase of its political campaign.

He said the party’s objective was to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative capable of addressing the country’s economic, security and governance challenges.

The announcement comes as political manoeuvring intensifies ahead of the 2027 election, with parties and political blocs already positioning themselves for what is expected to be a fiercely contested race for the presidency.
