The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has dismantled two illegal alcohol production syndicates in Lagos, seizing counterfeit premium brands including Hennessy, Martell, Jack Daniel’s and Glenfiddich, with an estimated street value of N350 million.

The agency said the operation followed credible intelligence, leading enforcement teams to raid facilities at Zamfara Plaza in the Trade Fair Complex and parts of Lagos Island, where adulterated alcoholic beverages were being produced and distributed.

At the Trade Fair Complex, operatives uncovered a makeshift production site fitted with plastic mixing tanks, improvised filtration systems, and large quantities of empty branded bottles, corks and packaging materials used to imitate high-end spirits.

Among the seized products were fake versions of globally recognised brands such as Hennessy, Martell, Jack Daniel’s, Glenfiddich and Jameson, pointing to a sophisticated counterfeiting network targeting Nigeria’s premium alcohol market.

A related operation on Lagos Island led to the arrest of a suspect allegedly linked to the illegal production and sale of the fake drinks through a retail outlet.

All recovered items have been seized and evacuated for regulatory action, while investigations continue to track down other individuals connected to the syndicates.

NAFDAC warned that consuming adulterated alcohol poses severe health risks, including poisoning, organ damage and death, urging the public to remain vigilant.

The agency reiterated its commitment to prosecuting offenders and advised consumers to purchase alcoholic beverages only from authorised and reputable outlets.

It also called on the public to report suspicious products or activities through its offices nationwide or via its toll-free line.
