The Lagos State Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development (MWID) has ramped up its enforcement actions at the Okunde Bluewater Scheme, Lekki, dislodging illegal occupants and demolishing newly erected shanties in a determined effort to protect public land.
Led by the Honourable Commissioner, Ekundayo Alebiosu, the operation marks a follow-up to last year’s extensive clean-up of the waterfront area along Lekki Coastal Road. Alebiosu emphasized that the days of indiscriminate land grabbing and unauthorized structures are over.
“We cleared this large expanse of land late last year, and it is no longer business as usual,” he said. “Any attempts to rebuild shanties or makeshift structures on this site will be met with swift enforcement.”

The Commissioner reiterated that such structures not only endanger the environment and public safety but also contradict the State’s long-term urban development plans. The Okunde site forms a key component of the proposed world-class Bluewater Scheme and coastal road network designed to enhance infrastructure and connectivity in Lagos.
“These shanties pose not only an environmental hazard but also a significant security risk,” Alebiosu added. “They are not in line with the Lagos State Mega City Master Plan.”
To maintain the integrity of the reclaimed land, MWID will conduct regular monitoring and follow-up enforcement operations. Alebiosu warned that no illegal resettlement will be tolerated, and the ministry is fully committed to seeing the project through.
“MWID remains steadfast in its mission to secure and transform all government-owned waterfronts across Lagos State, in alignment with the vision of a clean, secure, and globally competitive Mega City.”
The Okunde Bluewater Scheme is part of Lagos State’s ambitious push to reclaim underutilized waterfronts and transform them into vibrant, functional urban spaces. Residents and developers alike are urged to support the initiative by refraining from illegal land occupation and aligning with the government’s development agenda.
