A series of road collisions along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway at Otedola Bridge inward Secretariat today left one driver dead, multiple vehicles damaged, and traffic severely disrupted.
The primary incident involved two heavy-duty trailers, one carrying sand and the other granite, which collided violently in what eyewitnesses described as a reckless contest for right of way.
The driver of the sand-laden trailer became trapped in the wreckage and later died despite efforts by emergency personnel to rescue him.
The driver of the granite-laden trailer escaped unharmed.
Shortly after, a separate trailer transporting flour overturned about 50 metres from the main crash site, worsening the congestion along the already gridlocked corridor.
LASTMA operatives on routine patrol responded swiftly, extricating the trapped driver and transferring him to Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) personnel.
He was taken to the General Hospital, Ikeja, where he was pronounced dead.
Security personnel from the Alausa Police Division were also deployed to manage crowd control and maintain order at the scene.
The accidents blocked nearly 80 percent of the carriageway, forcing authorities to redirect motorists through alternate routes, including Ojodu–Olole connecting Agidingbi, Coca-Cola, Secretariat, and 7-Up, to facilitate movement toward Gbagada or Ojota.
Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, described the crashes as “deeply regrettable and largely preventable,” citing impatience and failure to yield as contributing factors.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and commended the coordinated response of LASTMA, LASAMBUS, and security agencies.
The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to road safety and urged operators of heavy-duty vehicles to exercise caution and adherence to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
