A 20-year-old widow, Faith Nyanchama, has been charged with attempted murder after she allegedly stabbed a man who broke into her house in Nairobi, Kenya.

Prosecutors accused her of trying to kill the alleged intruder, Filbert Nzoyisaba, on December 2, 2023.

The man reportedly broke into Nyanchama’s house in Nairobi’s Kaloleni Estate at 2am on the said day.

Nyanchama, who was sleeping with her two children, told the police that she was woken up by a loud bang at the door and before she could find out what was going on Nzoyisaba had already gained entry into the house.

She immediately harmed herself with a knife and demanded from the intruder what he wanted from her and her children, but the man kept advancing towards them.

She stabbed the man twice on the head and in the abdomen, forcing him to flee the house. But he fell on the doorstep, bleeding profusely.

She raised the alarm which brought neighbours to the scene.

She later threw away the knife and then took her child and ran to the nearest police station to report the incident.

Police who arrived at the scene after the report found that neighbours had rushed the man to the nearest hospital.

Police detained her after they were unable to find the weapon she used.

Faith denied the charges while appearing in court.

She told the court that the man who forcefully gained entry into her house was a total stranger to her, hence, her decision to defend herself and her children.

She was released on a 300,000 shillings cash bail by Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi.

Police said they were yet to take statements from Nzoyisaba, as he is still unable to talk.

The matter was adjourned till January 9, 2024.
