What was meant to be one of the proudest moments in a mother’s life has instead become a story of devastating loss.

Mrs Oluranti Olufunmilayo Esther Akinyemi travelled from Nigeria to the United Kingdom to attend her son’s graduation ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, February 18, 2026 (today). The announcement of her passing was made a day earlier, on Tuesday, as the family prepared for what should have been a celebration.

According to relatives, she arrived in the UK in high spirits, looking forward to witnessing the milestone she had long prayed for. Less than 20 hours after landing, she suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in the middle of the night.

Emergency responders rushed her to Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, where doctors placed her on life support.

For three days, her family kept vigil, hoping for a miracle. She was later declared clinically dead.

As graduation ceremonies proceed on Wednesday, a day meant for applause and photographs has instead become one of mourning for her son and loved ones.

Family members describe the tragedy as sudden and completely unexpected.

Now, alongside their grief, they face urgent financial demands. They are seeking assistance to repatriate her body to Nigeria for burial, settle outstanding medical bills incurred in the UK, and cover funeral expenses.

A crowdfunding appeal has been launched to support the family during what they describe as the most painful period of their lives.

Friends and well-wishers have continued to express shock and sympathy, reflecting on the cruel timing of a journey that began with joy but ended in heartbreak.
