Morocco has named its longest highway after United States President, Donald Trump, in a move widely seen as reinforcing the strategic partnership between Rabat and Washington, particularly over the long-running Western Sahara issue.

President Trump announced the honour on his Truth Social platform, where he thanked King Mohammed VI and shared a promotional video showcasing the newly named route.

“Thank you to Highly Respected Mohammed VI, the King of Morocco — Such a Great Honor! I look forward to traveling the entire length of this Great Highway someday, hopefully soon!”

The road, officially designated the President Donald J. Trump Highway, stretches approximately 1,055 kilometres (655 miles) from Tiznit in southern Morocco to Dakhla in Western Sahara, making it the country’s longest highway and one of Africa’s most significant transport corridors.

The accompanying video described the highway as a lasting symbol of the historic relationship between Morocco and the United States, noting that Morocco was the first country to recognise American independence and highlighting more than two centuries of diplomatic ties.

The renaming also carries geopolitical significance. The highway traverses Western Sahara, a disputed territory claimed by both Morocco and the Algeria-backed Polisario Front.

During his first presidency in 2020, Trump recognised Moroccan sovereignty over the territory, reversing decades of US policy and strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. That position has since remained a central pillar of US-Morocco relations.

The highway forms a key part of Morocco’s strategy to improve transport infrastructure, facilitate trade and accelerate economic development in its southern provinces.

The corridor also supports access to the under-construction Dakhla Atlantic Port, a flagship project intended to strengthen Morocco’s commercial links with West Africa.

The announcement has attracted international attention, with supporters describing the gesture as recognition of Trump’s role in strengthening US-Morocco relations, while observers note that the decision further underlines Rabat’s efforts to consolidate international backing for its position on Western Sahara.
