After a week of action-packed encounters, Zahed Mohammed from Egypt and Millie Tomlinson from England emerged the winners of this year’s Chamberlain Squash Open (CSO).
Mohammed defeated fellow Egyptian Youssef Soliman 3-0 in a rousing game to lift the trophy in the men’s category, held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
Millie Tomlinson (England) thrashed Menna Hamed (Egypt) 3-0 to emerge the winner of the CSO in women category.
A total prize money of $25,000 has been earmarked for the men’s category and $10,000 for the women.
In his remarks, a very elated Zahed Mohammed described his journey right from the qualifying rounds to his victory as very encouraging. He said that he was looking forward to other PSA-sanctioned tournaments across the globe.
He thanked the organizers of the tournament for the initiative and said it would help grow the game of Squash.
Tomlinson said her victory would ginger her to remain in the upward trajectory in the game.
The finals attracted officials of Lagos State Government represented by the Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Kweku Adedayo Tandoh the Nigerian Squash Federation President, Boye Oyerinde, Managing Director of Remita, Mr. John Obaro, squash fans, students and the public.
The representative of the Chief Executive Officer of Century Group, Ms Data Jaja expressed joy that the oil servicing firm was able to support the tournament, describing the CSO as a strong platform to give back to the society by way of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
The 2018 edition of the CSO is the second in the series and duly endorsed by the Professional Squash Association (PSA).
In his remarks at the closing ceremony, the Promoter of CSO, Chamberlain Usoh thanked all the players for exhibiting high level of good sportsmanship.
He also appreciated the Lagos State Government, sponsors of the tournament, the Squash community and fans of the sport.
