The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has ordered a comprehensive mental health screening for all its personnel as part of measures to curb misconduct and strengthen professionalism within the force.
The directive was issued on Thursday by the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, during an emergency meeting with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and heads of tactical units across the Command.
Sanusi warned officers against all forms of misconduct capable of bringing the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute and stressed strict adherence to human rights laws in the discharge of their duties.
He directed senior officers to return to their respective commands and immediately brief their subordinates on the new directives, adding that compliance reports must be submitted to the Command Headquarters.
The Commissioner also introduced a vicarious liability policy, stating that any senior officer would be held accountable for misconduct by personnel under their supervision.
As part of efforts to improve discipline and operational efficiency, Sanusi ordered the Command’s Medical Director, ACP (Dr.) Ifayase Olabanji Akinola, in collaboration with the Police Counseling Unit, to commence a comprehensive psychological and mental health assessment of all officers.
The exercise is scheduled to begin on May 4, 2026, starting with junior officers, and is aimed at enhancing emotional stability, sound judgment, and overall performance.
The Command, through its spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, urged residents to remain law-abiding and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through designated emergency lines.
The move marks a significant step by the FCT Police Command to address internal discipline and promote responsible policing.
