Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested four suspected notorious cultists during a midnight operation in the Egbeda area of Lagos, recovering two firearms, 10 live cartridges and a jack knife.
The suspects, identified as Nurudeen Ganiu, 34; Oluwaleke Fagbula, 38; Emmanuel Silas, 41; and Nurudeen Abdullahi, 41, were apprehended following intelligence reports that suspected cult members were conducting an initiation ceremony in the area.
According to the Lagos State Police Command, operatives swiftly launched a covert operation based on the intelligence, leading to the successful arrest of the suspects and the recovery of a locally made cut-to-size pistol, an English Beretta pistol loaded with ten rounds of live ammunition, and a jack knife.
Police investigations revealed that one of the suspects is an alleged cult kingpin and a former student of a university in Ogun State who was reportedly rusticated in 2022 over cult-related activities.
The Command further disclosed that the gang had allegedly been involved in thuggery and violent criminal activities, terrorising residents of Egbeda and neighbouring communities for an extended period.
Preliminary findings also indicated that the suspects confessed to being active members of the notorious Eiye Confraternity. Investigators alleged that the group operated with motorcycles, using them to launch attacks on unsuspecting members of the public and disrupt social gatherings at gunpoint.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, commended the operatives for what he described as a professional and intelligence-driven operation that led to the arrests and seizure of weapons.
He reiterated the Command’s determination to sustain the fight against cultism, violent crimes and other threats to public safety across the state.
The police boss also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to aid crime prevention and detection.
The suspects are currently in police custody while investigations continue.
