Mojisola Meranda has stepped down as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly after a brief tenure of 49 days, amid internal political dynamics and party directives.
During a plenary session today, Meranda announced her resignation, emphasising her commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the legislative institution.
She stated that her decision was a personal sacrifice made to protect the Assembly, underscoring her dedication to the principles and stability of the legislative process.
Following her resignation, Meranda was re-elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.
Lawmakers praised her leadership style and efforts in maintaining peace within the Assembly during her tenure.
They also commended her adherence to the rules and regulations of the All Progressives Congress (APC), reflecting her resilience and commitment to party unity.
Meranda’s resignation comes in the wake of intense pressure from APC leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, advocating for the reinstatement of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker who was impeached earlier this year.
Reports indicate that despite resistance from some lawmakers, party leadership exerted significant influence to facilitate Obasa’s return, highlighting the intricate power dynamics within the state’s political landscape.
