The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has confirmed that its membership registration website crashed following an unprecedented surge in user traffic, with the party promising to restore access by 10am on Monday.
In a brief update posted on its official X account, the party said maintenance work was underway to resolve the disruption. “Site Maintenance: Registration on our site comes online by 10am today,” the message read.
Checks by Newsmakerslive.org as of 9am showed that the portal, https://membership.ndcnigeria.com/ remained inaccessible, indicating that the technical issues had yet to be fully resolved.
The outage comes less than 24 hours after high-profile defections boosted interest in the party.
Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, formally joined the NDC on Sunday, in what observers describe as a significant political realignment ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Both politicians cited internal divisions, protracted legal disputes and destabilising external influences as reasons for their exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The party has faced a series of leadership and legal challenges in recent months, some of which have been subject to ongoing litigation, raising concerns about its internal cohesion.
Newsmakerslive.org recalls that website outages are not uncommon during periods of sudden digital engagement, particularly when organisations experience traffic volumes beyond existing server capacity.
Such disruptions have occurred during major political events in Nigeria, including party primaries and campaign announcements.
The NDC has not disclosed the number of new registrations recorded prior to the disruption, nor has it provided details of measures being implemented to prevent a recurrence.
However, party sources indicate that efforts are underway to strengthen its digital infrastructure in response to rising interest.
The defections of Obi and Kwankwaso are widely seen as a potential boost to the NDC’s national profile, given their established support bases.
As of the time of filing this report, the NDC registration portal remained inaccessible.
