A major fire erupted today at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) headquarters in Abuja, sending plumes of thick black smoke across the Wuse Zone 5 skyline and triggering a large emergency response.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing flames and heavy smoke billowing from part of the multi-storey tax agency building on Sokode Crescent in the heart of Nigeria’s capital, prompting staff and visitors to flee the scene as firefighters battled the blaze.
Personnel from the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service were deployed swiftly, with no immediate official confirmation of casualties or the cause of the fire as of this afternoon.
Authorities have yet to clarify whether sensitive documents or records were affected.
The incident triggered widespread alarm among nearby residents and social media users, many of whom shared video footage of the blaze online.
Information about the evolving situation remains limited, with emergency teams still on site.
In a separate incident on Saturday, a devastating fire destroyed four out of five three-bedroom flats at a residential property on 13 Nelson Mandela Street in the elite Asokoro district of Abuja.
The building, reported to belong to former Zamfara State governor, Senator Ahmed Sani Yerima, was engulfed after flames were first noticed around rooftop solar panels before spreading rapidly to adjoining units.
Officials from the Federal Fire Service, the FCT Fire Service, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the FCT Police Command responded to the scene.
Fortunately, no lives were lost in that blaze, though residents’ furniture, clothing and other personal effects were destroyed.
Emergency teams contained the fire before it spread to neighbouring structures.
Today’s blaze at the FIRS headquarters is unfolding and authorities are expected to issue official statements as investigations into its cause and impact progress.
