The Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, has been plunged into deep sorrow following the untimely death of its Best Graduating Student for the 2022/2023 academic session, Orisawayi Samuel Emmanuel, fondly known as Samoriz, whose life was cut short just months after his crowning academic triumph.

Orisawayi, an exceptional graduate of the Department of Civil Engineering, passed away on Sunday, December 7, barely six months after he was celebrated before a cheering crowd at MAPOLY’s 15th Combined Convocation Ceremony on June 24.

His death came before he could receive the N2.5 million cash reward publicly promised to him by Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, in recognition of his outstanding academic performance.

At the convocation ceremony, which saw more than 51,000 ND and HND students graduate, Orisawayi stood out as his name was announced as the overall best graduating student, drawing prolonged applause and admiration.

For many in attendance, it was a defining moment for a young man whose brilliance, discipline and quiet determination had earned him the highest academic honour of the institution.

Governor Abiodun had, during the ceremony, pledged a cash reward to outstanding graduates as part of the state’s commitment to celebrating excellence.

Sadly, investigations indicate that the pledge made to Orisawayi remained unfulfilled at the time of his sudden death.

His passing has cast a heavy pall over the MAPOLY community, with students, lecturers and alumni struggling to come to terms with the painful irony of losing a young scholar so soon after his greatest achievement and before he could enjoy the reward meant to honour his hard work.

Many have described the loss as heartbreaking, noting that Orisawayi represented hope and the promise of a future built on merit and perseverance.

Orisawayi was laid to rest on Monday in an atmosphere of profound grief, as friends, colleagues and members of the academic community gathered in tears to bid farewell to a life they described as brief but profoundly meaningful.

Until his death, he was widely regarded as one of MAPOLY’s brightest minds, with many convinced that he was destined for a remarkable professional career.
