Several people are feared dead in a gas tanker explosion in Accra, Ghana on Saturday night.

Local media report a huge explosion at Atomic Junction, close to the popular Madina Zongo Junction.

Images published by Myjoyonline.com show a huge ball of fire towering into the night sky.

Traffic on the affected route has been reportedly diverted as firefighters battle the raging fire.

Eyewitnesses say the explosion struck when a gas tanker was offloading its contents at a station. The fire instantly spread to a petrol filling station opposite the gas station.

Hundreds of residents in the affected areas and a section of the main campus of the University of Ghana, Legon are said to have fled their homes following the explosion.

The fire was still raging as at press time.
