In 1944 a man from the East was arrested by the police in Lagos for impregnating his daughter.
He asked the police in pidgin English: “Wetin be your wahala inside. Na mi born am. Na mi fuck am. Na mi give am belle.”
Before then, such a story had never been heard in Lagos, now it’s happening every now and then.
The Lagos State commissioner of police (CP) Imohimi Edgal, presented a similar case to reporters today. He paraded a 50-year-old security man identified as Taiwo Oyelabi, who was accused of impregnating his 21-year-old daughter.
But the suspect, who was twice married, told NewsmakersNG that it was the daughter that raped him.
Edgal, who is currently running a campaign against sexual and gender based violence, described Oyelabi’s act as bizarre, unafrican, and inhuman.
He said, “Policemen attached to the Igando police station received a complaint from members of the public that a 50-year-old man was having amorous relationship with his 21-year-old daughter.
“Suspect in this case is one Taiwo Oyelabi of 15, Community Road, Obadore Iyana-Iba, Igando, Lagos; while the victim is Taiwo Nobility Oyelabi.
“The suspect divorced his wife when Taiwo and her twin sister were still in their infancy. As a result the twins were taken to the suspect’s younger sister’s home.
“However, sometime in November 2017, the suspect took the now grown up Taiwo from his sister and brought her home to live with him. Since then, the suspect had been having inappropriate sexual liaison with his daughter. The result of this unholy alliance between father and daughter was pregnancy.
“Investigation into the case revealed that the suspect is a security man, but the strange part of his work was that whenever he was going to work, he goes with his daughter. This strange behaviour attracted the attention of the community and they reported to the police.
‘I don’t understand. It just happened one day. One night, my daughter held me down. She started kissing me. She was too strong and she raped me. I shouted and took her to a church.’
“In his statement, the suspect blamed the devil for his act.”
Defending himself, the suspect told NewsmakersNG that his daughter raped him.
He said, “I am from Ekiti State. My twin daughters were two years old when their mother left me. My sister took them to stay with her in Code d’Ivoire. Her sister got married but Taiwo was brought back to me because she was dull.
“I don’t understand. It just happened one day. One night, my daughter held me down. She started kissing me. She was too strong and she raped me. I shouted and took her to a church. The prophet I met in the church told me that it was a spiritual attack. He gave me oil and some Psalms to pray with. She raped me five times; so to keep her busy, I was taking her to work in a polythene-making factory.
“I got married a second time, but the woman also left me. There was one occasion when I told my daughter to prepare food for me, and after preparing food for me, she held me down and raped me. I ran out and the Hausa people asked me what happened and I told them. It is not ordinary. I know, but I am not responsible for her pregnancy because she was not a virgin when I met her. She has a boyfriend called Afeez. She told me that Afeez is the owner of the pregnancy. I wanted to kill myself with Otapiapia (poison) when the police arrested me and said that I was responsible for her pregnancy. She is three months pregnant. I cannot tell her to abort it. That child is my grandchild.”
Edgal said that the suspect would be transferred to the Special Sexual Offences Court in Ikeja.”
