A 24-year-old man will be joining his elder brother in jail after paying him a visit at the Kirikiri maximum prisons in Lagos.

A Federal High Court, Lagos today sentenced Patrick Amadi to 24 months imprisonment for smuggling Indian hemp into the prison.

Amadi is accused of hiding 200 grammes of Indian hemp (Cannabis Sativa) in his sandals to hand over to his brother he went to visit in jail.

Justice Ayotunde Faji handed down the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty to one count charge of unlawful dealing in narcotic brought against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The prosecutor, Mr. Jerry Aernan, told the court that the accused was arrested on June 18, 2017 at the Kirikiri Maximum Prisons with 200 grammes of the drug.

According to Aernan, prison officials who arrested the accused said he hid the drug in the sandals he wore when he visited his brother who is serving term in the prison.

He said the offence is contrary to and punishable under section 11(c) of NDLEA Act Cap. N30, laws of the federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The accused pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing him.

He told the court he had become remorseful since he was arrested and promised not to engage in crime again.

After sentencing, the judge admonished him to use his jail period to turn a new leaf and not to go back to crime.
