The Oyo State Government will inaugurate the first phase of its 11 MW hybrid Independent Power Project (IPP) on December 6, 2024, marking a major milestone in the “Light Up Oyo” initiative.
The 5 MW phase, developed in partnership with Elektron Energy, is set to power the streetlighting project and provide sustainable energy for critical infrastructure.
Governor Seyi Makinde, in his bimonthly newsletter, described the project as a cornerstone of his administration’s strategy to enhance economic development and improve quality of life in the state.
“This is more than just streetlights. The IPP is the backbone of a reliable energy framework that will drive industrial growth, attract investors, and support essential public facilities,” Makinde said.
The “Light Up Oyo” initiative, aimed at illuminating major roads and public spaces, has been widely praised for improving security and boosting nightlife-driven commerce.
The new power project ensures the sustainability of the initiative while laying the foundation for future energy expansions.
Makinde also highlighted the broader implications of the project, including its alignment with the Oyo State-Shell Nigeria Gas partnership and other energy infrastructure plans.
He called on residents to witness the historic inauguration event, emphasising its importance to the state’s long-term development agenda.
