Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has condemned the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu, labeling it an illegal act that undermines Nigeria’s democracy.

The governor expressed his stance in his latest bimonthly newsletter, urging Nigerians to resist actions that threaten the country’s democratic principles.

Makinde criticised the suspension of the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers State, describing it as a direct affront to the rule of law.

“The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of the executive and legislative arms of government by the presidency is an illegality that right-thinking members of society must oppose,” he stated.

The governor called on Nigerians to prioritise fairness, equity, and justice, emphasising that the country’s democratic tenets should never be compromised.

“We must choose to stand up for what is right, even if it means standing alone,” Makinde said, adding that protecting democracy is critical to the nation’s development.

Makinde expressed support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s decision to challenge President Tinubu’s actions in court, hailing the party’s leadership for taking a decisive stand.

“Yesterday, the PDP Governors’ Forum rose from an emergency meeting where we unanimously decided to challenge the actions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a court of competent jurisdiction,” he revealed.

The governor highlighted the importance of safeguarding democratic structures, noting that the relative peace in Oyo State has contributed to significant economic growth, including a GDP increase of over 50% since 2019.

He called on Nigerians to act swiftly, saying, “The time to act is now!”
