A faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), believed to be aligned with internal structures associated with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced plans to hold a special national convention to ratify former President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s presidential candidate.

The notice, circulated via the party’s official communication channels on social media, states that the convention is scheduled for Saturday, May 30, 2026, in Abuja.

According to the announcement, the event will take place at the ‘A’ Class Event Centre, Kassim Ibrahim Way, Wuse 2, and is expected to commence at 10am.

The invitation was signed by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, and the National Organising Secretary, Hon. Theophilus Dakas Shan.

It stated that the gathering is intended to formally ratify Jonathan’s nomination, signalling what could become a significant early alignment ahead of the 2027 general election cycle.

The development comes amid ongoing internal tensions within the PDP, where political blocs have frequently diverged over leadership control, zoning arrangements, and strategic direction since the 2023 general election.

The party has, in recent years, been shaped by competing power centres, most notably the influence of figures aligned with Governor Makinde and those aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, a dynamic that has repeatedly affected cohesion at the national level.

While the announcement points to growing momentum around Jonathan’s potential return to frontline politics, it remains unclear whether the broader PDP National Working Committee or NEC has formally endorsed the proposed convention.

Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, has maintained a largely statesmanlike public role since conceding defeat in the 2015 presidential election, a moment widely regarded as a key milestone in Nigeria’s democratic history.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official public confirmation from Jonathan regarding acceptance of the nomination ratification process.
