Adejobi told Chief Detective magazine that the suspect had impersonated the uncle of one U.S. based Dr J.O.S. Okeke, who began to receive a series of e-mails after sending N5million to a First Bank Nig. Plc account of his cousin named as Iloka Ndubuisi.
Before Okeke could figure out what was going on, he had acceded to the request to transfer money to the suspected fraudster twice.
Adejobi said: “On the 4th April, 2016, Dr Okeke received a call from one Chief Osifo asking him to check his mail box for an instruction. At this Juncture, he sensed something was amiss. Hence, he called his uncle to confirm if he actually sent the mail but to his chagrin, the uncle said he never sent any mail to him. And the matter was reported to the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Abdulmajid Ali, for investigation.
“In the course of investigation, the unit, in collaboration with the bank officials, was able to track down and arrest the suspect at Benin, in Edo State. The suspect has confessed to the crime. He belongs to a three man gang of Internet fraudsters. Items recovered from the suspect included a laptop, ATM cards of different banks belonging to one Blessedson Ehrahon.
