Liverpool and Portugal’s star forward, Diogo Jota, 28, and his 26‑year‑old brother, André Silva, died in a car accident early this morning.
They were driving on Spain’s A‑52 highway near Zamora when a tyre blew out. The brother’s Lamborghini veered off the road near Palacios de Sanabria and caught fire.
Both brothers lost their lives at the scene despite the efforts of emergency services.
Diogo had just married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22—only ten days before the crash. The couple had three young children together.
Jota had joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton for around £41 million.
In five years at Anfield, he made 182 appearances and scored 65 goals, helping the team win the Premier League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup.
He also played 49 times for Portugal, scoring 14 goals, and won two Nations League titles.
André Silva was a professional footballer too, playing as a midfielder or winger for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
The Spanish Civil Guard and emergency services are investigating the accident.
The Portuguese Football Federation, Liverpool FC, international players, and managers have released heartfelt tributes. The federation has asked UEFA to observe a minute’s silence before Portugal’s Women’s Euro match versus Spain in Switzerland.
