Following the tragic assassination of Prophet Yomi Adetula during Sunday service at a Celestial Church of Christ in Idiroko, Ogun State, yesterday, his legal counsel has vehemently denied circulating allegations labeling the deceased as a smuggler.
In a detailed Facebook post, the lawyer, Olumuyiwa Alani Bankole, recounted events from December when Adetula was arrested by customs officers at the Idiroko border and detained at the Federal Operations Unit in Ikeja.
The arrest was reportedly due to claims that Adetula interfered with customs officers during their duties. However, as the head of the anti-smuggling unit of the So-Safe Corps, Adetula had approached customs officials to inform them about smugglers allegedly bringing small arms into Nigeria through the Benin Republic border.
The lawyer further detailed his efforts to secure Adetula’s release, which included consultations with the So-Safe Corps leadership and engagements with customs authorities in both Lagos and Abuja.
These interventions culminated in Adetula’s unconditional release, with customs leadership in Abuja concurring with the lawyer’s submissions. At no point during these proceedings was Adetula accused of smuggling activities.
Emphasising Adetula’s integrity, the lawyer highlighted his roles as a So-Safe Corps officer and a businessman managing a fish depot and bakery.
He condemned the posthumous smuggling allegations as baseless and urged authorities to diligently investigate the assassination to prevent future occurrences.
The Ogun State community remains in mourning, with residents calling for justice and the apprehension of those responsible for the heinous act.
The So-Safe Corps has assured the public of their commitment to uncovering the truth behind the assassination.
