Fresh controversy has trailed the Oyo State House of Assembly after a lawmaker alleged that a N300 billion loan for Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration was secretly approved during the chamber’s recess.
Hon. Shittu Ibrahim, who represents Saki West constituency, claimed in a statement this evening that the approval was carried out in an emergency sitting which many members were neither informed about nor invited to attend.
According to him, the loan was endorsed on August 19 and finalised on August 26, even though the Assembly had adjourned from July 31 to September 16.
“I want it on record that I, Hon. Shittu Ibraheem, representing Saki West, was not part of those who approved this N300 billion loan,” he said. “Why should such a major decision be rushed through during a recess? Why was it not communicated to all members, especially at a time when Oyo State already enjoys nearly 500 percent more in federal allocations?”
Ibrahim’s claims have sparked questions over the transparency of the process and renewed debates about the state’s rising debt profile.
Officials of the Assembly or the executive are yet to publicly respond to the allegations.
