The Lagos State University Students’ Union has announced legal and disciplinary steps following the alleged physical assault of a 300-level Nursing student at the university’s College of Medicine.
The union, in a statement dated September 2, 2026, identified the student as Adebayo Oluwatumininu, who was allegedly assaulted by the mother of Hassan Temiloluwa, a Physiotherapy student.
According to the LASU Students’ Union, the incident left Oluwatumininu with an injury to her eye, prompting officials of its Ikeja campus to take her to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, for medical assessment and treatment.
The union said an official medical report on the extent of the injury was expected on Thursday.
In a significant escalation of the case, LASUSU disclosed that Hassan’s mother had been taken into police custody and was expected to be arraigned in court on Tuesday over allegations of physical assault and threats.
“Legal action has also been taken. The mother of Hassan Temiloluwa is currently in police custody and will be arraigned in court today on charges of physical assault and alleged threats,” the union stated.
It added that Hassan would separately face the university’s disciplinary machinery over the incident.
“Hassan Temiloluwa will face the University Disciplinary Committee in accordance with established procedures,” the statement said.
The students’ body did not provide details of the disagreement that allegedly preceded the confrontation or explain the circumstances under which the mother became involved.
LASUSU, however, strongly condemned violence as a means of resolving disputes, insisting that disagreements involving students should never degenerate into physical attacks.
“No disagreement should escalate into physical assault,” the union said, pledging to continue taking measures aimed at protecting students and safeguarding their welfare.
The union commended the LASU management, the Centre for Gender-Based and Sexual Violence and the Adebayo family for their intervention in the case. It also acknowledged DSP Onikoyi Oladipupo, Hon. Adeaga Emmanuel and Comr. Tsap for their contributions.
The statement was jointly signed by the 37th LASUSU President, Olipehin Ahmad Rufai, and the union’s Public Relations Officer, Jinadu Jamiu Ademola.
The development is expected to proceed on two fronts, with the police and courts handling the alleged criminal aspects of the case while the university investigates possible breaches of its disciplinary regulations.
