A Virgin Atlantic passenger jet flying from Lagos to London Heathrow had reportedly declared a mid-air emergency and landed in Marseille, France.
The Airbus A340, which departed Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, yesterday, at 10.59am, was scheduled to land at London Heathrow airport in the evening at 4.55pm.
But five hours into the journey, at 32,650ft, the captain issued an alert for a priority landing and urgent medical assistance after a passenger fell ill.
Flight VS652 diverted to Marseille Provence Airport, MailOnline reported today.
The aircraft carrying 175 passengers and 16 crew landed safely.
The ill passenger was met by emergency services.
A spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic disclosed: ‘Unfortunately one of our customers required urgent medical assistance while flying from Lagos to London Heathrow on our flight VS652 today.
‘The flight will then continue its journey onto London Heathrow. We’re sorry for the delay and any inconvenience caused.’
The aircraft has departed Marseille for its original destination.
