Lagos State authorities have moved decisively against Access Bank Plc at its Oniru, Victoria Island premises following the discovery that the facility’s wastewater treatment plant was non-functional, discharging untreated sewage into public drainage systems.
The State Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, announced that legal action will be taken against individuals who attacked government officials during enforcement activities.
“The State will proceed to court to obtain the necessary orders for the arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in the attack on government officials carrying out their lawful duties,” Wahab said.
He confirmed that enforcement officers have been reinforced and will return to the site tonight to seal off the property, in strict compliance with Lagos State Environmental Laws.
“Our officers will carry out their duties without compromise. There will be no sacred cows in the enforcement of environmental regulations. Any individual or organisation found violating environmental laws will be held fully accountable,” Wahab added.
Earlier, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) collected effluent samples from the premises, which laboratory tests confirmed contained untreated sewage.
The commissioner described the attack on officials as “unacceptable” and warned that all violators, regardless of status, would face the full weight of the law.
