Lagos Rising: Untold Stories of Sanwo-Olu’s Revolution

Segun Atanda/

Lagos State commissioner for information and strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso has told why Gov Babajide Sanwo-Olu should be given four more years to lift Lagos higher.

In a 3:24mins video clip captioned ‘Imagine Four More Years of Sanwo-Olu Hamzat,’ Omotoso highlighted the giant strides made by Sanwo-Olu in the transport sector.

In the media clip, Omotoso gives updates on the Red Line and Blue Line, the Lagos State Mass Transit system designed to move over one million passengers daily.

According to him, the Red Line would start moving more than 500, 000 passengers daily. When completed it will have the capacity to move over one million passengers daily.

To make way for the project, 700 buildings were acquired, 5000 tenants were relocated, and the state government paid for their discomfort.

The Red Line is 31 kilometers from Agbado to Marina.

The Blue Line, which is 27 kilometers, will run from Marina to Mile 2 in the first phase. It’s the first of its kind in Africa. It will run on its own electricity. It will also carry over 500, 000 passengers per day.

On water transportation, Omotoso said, “The Lagos ferry service has 19 Boats and a 180-tonnage barge to move cargoes at social events. As of November 2022, it has ferried 1,006,000 passengers. It’s setting standards in the sector, in terms of safety, efficiency, and comfort.”

He added that Sanwo-Olu has built 15 jetties spread across the state – Badagry, Ilado, Amuwo-Odofin, Ito-Omu, Ofin, Ijede, Ibeshe, Liverpool, and Apapa. He also bought more boats for LAGFERRY to get more commuters sailing.

On road transportation, he said that the Sanwo-Olu administration had launched the Lagride with 1000 units of Sport Utility Vehicles. He commissioned four bus terminals in Yaba, Mafoluku, Oyingbo, and Ajah. He commissioned 78 bus shelters and bus depots. At inception, the administration identified 60 gridlock points, and as it worked 41 junctions and roundabouts including Allen Avenue, Ikotun, Lekki Phase 1 & 2, Maryland, and Ajah. Thirteen are ongoing, and six are on the drawing board.

Omotoso also disclosed that Sanwo-Olu introduced 500 units of First and Last Mile (FLM) buses to replace commercial motorcycles popularly known as Okada, and he injected 560 high-medium capacity buses for standard routes and 14 new BRT stations were built.

To ensure the free flow of traffic in the state, the administration employed additional 1300 LASTMA officials.

“Via all these modes of transportation, the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration has created over 1000 jobs in the transport sector,” Omotoso said, asking Lagosians to imagine another four years of Sanwo-Olu in Lagos.
